Cultural Relations

During the Third session of the Joint Committee Meeting, a cultural agreement was signed on 20th July 1999.

India has been providing about 30 scholarships every year through ICCR to Yemeni students and around 20 scholarships under ITEC Programme.

Future Cooperation

The Government of Yemen are aware of Indian capabilities and are keen on seeing a greater interaction between the two countries. Specific avenues for cooperation are : Telecommunications, Highways and bridges, Civil engineering, Water Management and Irrigation schemes, Education, Health, Oil and Gas, Mineral exploration, Power projects etc.

Other opportunities

Yemen heavily depends on import of all items except oil and fish. There is considerable scope for collaboration in setting up small scale industries with Indian collaboration and know-how for manufacture and marketing/export of consumer durables. Analysis of preliminary trade statistics for the year 2002 indicated that : (a) India’s interest had been in all about 200 items imported by Yemen; (b) In 46 items, India had been the first or full source of import; (c) India was the second / third source of import in 73 items and if vigorous efforts were made, we could improve our export performance and become No. 1; and (d) India occupied 4th position onwards in 81 items.
